Cautious as usual, Josh chose his words carefully. “I’m happy to stay over. You shouldn’t be alone at a time like this. But you don’t have to go buying Lucky anything. She can make it through one night with a bowl of water and some food for the morning.”

Micah’s brow furrowed. “You sound kind of hesitant. I thought you’d be happy.” He nuzzled against Josh’s neck. “Imagine waking up in the morning together, naked in bed.”

That was certainly something he could get used to way too easily. Micah naked anywhere and anytime was a treat. But Josh wanted Micah to want him not because he was a convenient bed partner, but for the person Josh was inside. Maybe they were getting there, but not yet.

“How about tomorrow night? I don’t have a change of clothes or anything.”

“We could go back to your place and pick up everything you need.” Micah continued to kiss Josh’s neck, while coaxing him. “Come on, come home with me.”

With considerable effort, Josh pulled away from Micah and decided to hell with it. “Why do you want me to stay over so badly? You know I’ll be there for you tomorrow if you need me.”

As the silence mounted between them, Josh began to walk back toward the exit. He’d thrown down the gauntlet and as expected—

“I’m scared shitless,” whispered Micah.

This, Josh thought. This is what he’d been waiting to hear. Micah opening up to him, letting him in. “Of?” Josh kept his voice neutral, not wanting to scare him off.

“Of everything. Losing my grandmother. Getting the head of department position, not getting the position, I don’t know.” He ran his hand through his hair and Josh could sense the frustration rolling off him in waves. “Things have been happening around me lately, changing fast and I’m losing control.”

“And you always have to be in control, right?” Josh remembered how Micah behaved in bed until he let go and stopped trying to control everything. Once he set himself free, they soared together.

“It’s always only been me so I made my own way, on my terms.”

What a grim little existence. “You had your grandmother, though.”

“I don’t want to talk about this anymore. If you don’t want to come home with me, fine.” Darkness might hide his expression, but the tension in Micah’s voice was undeniable.

“Come on.” Josh placed a hand on the man’s arm. “Talk, let me in. Aren’t we friends?”

“I don’t know what the hell we are.”

Exasperated, Josh pushed at Micah’s arm, setting him back a few paces. “You’re lying. You’re scared and you don’t know what to say to me, so you act rude, hoping I’ll be the one to run away from this so you don’t have to deal with it. Well, I’m not going anywhere.”

“What do you want me to say?”

“You started to say it before. You’re scared. I can understand. Why are you scared? How can I help you?”

Josh held his breath. Even Lucky stopped scratching her ear and sat silent for once at their feet.
